Trope Terms of Service

Draft under legal review. Items marked "legal review required" are not final.

Effective date: [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: EFFECTIVE DATE] Last updated: 2026-09-12

These Terms are a contract between you and [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: COMPANY LEGAL ENTITY] ("Trope", "we", "us") for the Trope mobile app and the website at trytrope.chat (together, the "Service"). Please read them. The Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information and is part of these Terms.

1. Acceptance

By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Trope.

2. Who can use Trope

3. Your account

An account is needed to chat, create characters, save characters or subscribe. You can browse without one.

You can sign up with an email address and password, or with Google. You agree to give accurate information and keep it current. One person, one account; do not share your sign-in details or let anyone else use your account. You are responsible for everything that happens under your account. Tell us at support@trytrope.chat if you think someone else has accessed it.

4. What Trope is

Trope is an entertainment app. You choose a fictional character, exchange messages with it, and the story develops from what you both write. Replies are generated by artificial-intelligence models. You can also create your own characters, ask for an image of a scene, and let characters remember things from earlier conversations.

Characters are not people. They do not have feelings, opinions or knowledge of the world. They are software producing text in a fictional voice. Trope is not a substitute for human relationships, therapy, counselling or emergency services.

5. AI-generated content

Everything a character says, every generated image and every generated character profile is produced by an AI model. You acknowledge that AI output:

We do not review AI output before you see it. You are responsible for how you use it. If a reply is inappropriate, use Report in the message menu.

6. No professional advice

Nothing a character says is medical, mental-health, legal, financial, safety or other professional advice, and you must not rely on it as such. Characters cannot help in an emergency. If you or someone else is in danger, contact local emergency services.

7. Content you create

"Your content" means what you write in conversations, the characters you create with Spark (including your answers and any text you type), the memories you ask a character to keep, images you request, reports, and anything else you submit.

You keep what is yours. You retain whatever rights you have in your content. We do not claim ownership of your conversations or your characters.

Licence to us. So that we can run Trope, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, process, transmit, display to you and adapt your content for the purposes of providing, securing, supporting and improving the Service as described in these Terms and the Privacy Policy, including sending it to the AI providers that generate replies. This licence lasts while the content is on the Service and for as long afterwards as we need to keep it under the Privacy Policy; it ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies in backups until they rotate, content we must keep by law, and content we need to keep for safety reasons.

Your promises about your content. You confirm that you have the rights needed to submit it and that it does not break section 9.

Visibility. Your conversations and the characters you create are private to your account. Trope has no public feed. Our staff access your content only as the Privacy Policy describes.

8. AI output and ownership

To the extent we hold any rights in text or images generated for you, we assign them to you, subject to these Terms. Whether AI-generated material can be protected by copyright at all, and who would own it, depends on the law where you are and is not settled everywhere; we make no promise that you can claim copyright in generated output or stop others from using similar output. You may use generated output for personal, non-commercial purposes; any other use is at your own risk and responsibility.

9. Rules of use

Trope is a fictional character and role-play platform. To keep it safe for everyone, including users under 18, the following rules apply to everything you write, create or request, whether you are a free user or a Trope+ member.

Sexual and explicit content is not permitted. You must not create, request, or attempt to obtain:

Romance, flirtation, tension and drama are part of storytelling and are allowed. Explicit sexual content is not, and characters are instructed to steer away from it. That instruction is a safeguard, not a permission slip: if a character produces something explicit, that is a failure to report, not a feature to exploit.

Other prohibited content and conduct. You must not use Trope to:

10. Safety, reports and enforcement

Our safeguards are: rules built into every character's instructions (stories stay non-explicit, everyone in a story is an adult, characters do not act as real people), an age gate, and a Report button on every character and conversation. We do not have an automated content filter that inspects every message, and we do not read conversations routinely. Reports are reviewed by a person.

If we reasonably believe you have broken these Terms we may, with or without notice, remove or disable content, limit features, suspend your account, or terminate it. For the most serious breaches, in particular anything involving the sexual exploitation of minors, we will terminate immediately and may report to law enforcement. We may keep records of the breach and the action we took.

If you think we made a mistake, write to support@trytrope.chat and we will look again.

11. Trope+ subscriptions

What it is. Trope+ is an optional subscription that raises your monthly limits and unlocks premium characters. Free accounts currently include 20 messages and 3 scene images per calendar month (UTC); Trope+ currently includes 200 messages and 30 scene images. Regenerating or continuing a reply counts as a message; a scene image that fails to generate is not counted. We may change these limits and will announce material changes in the app.

Buying. Subscriptions are bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play using the payment method on your store account. Prices are shown in the app before you buy and may vary by country. The store, not Trope, charges you; we never receive your payment details. Apple's or Google's terms also apply to the purchase.

Renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period (for example weekly, monthly or yearly, as chosen) at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Your store account is charged for renewal.

Free trials and offers. If a free trial or introductory price is offered, its length and price are shown before you subscribe. A trial converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before it ends. Trials are offered by the store and may be limited to one per person.

Cancelling. Cancel any time in your store's subscription settings (Settings → Manage subscription opens them). Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep Trope+ until the end of the period you already paid for. Deleting the app or your Trope account does not cancel a subscription.

Refunds. Payments are non-refundable except where the law requires or the store's own refund policy provides. Refund requests go to Apple or Google, who decide them under their rules.

Restoring. If you reinstall or change devices, use Restore purchases in the app with the same store account.

Entitlements. Your subscription status is confirmed by the store through RevenueCat; if the store reports that a subscription has lapsed, been refunded or is invalid, Trope+ features stop.

12. Ending your account

By you. Settings → Delete account. Your account is marked for deletion and you can cancel until we process it. Processing removes your account and content as described in the Privacy Policy. Some records may remain for the reasons stated there.

By us. We may suspend or terminate your account for breach of these Terms (section 10), if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service. If we terminate for breach, you will not receive a refund for any unused subscription period, except where the law requires.

After termination. Your right to use the Service ends. Sections that by their nature should survive (content licence to the extent needed, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, governing law) survive.

13. Our intellectual property

The Trope app, website, name, mascot, logo, design, seeded characters and their stories, the software and the prompts and configurations behind it belong to us or our licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the app on devices you own or control, for personal, non-commercial use, in line with these Terms and the store's rules. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell or lease any part of the Service, or use our trademarks, without written permission.

14. Feedback

If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them without any obligation to you.

15. Third-party services

Trope relies on other companies' services: AI models through OpenRouter, sign-in through Google, subscriptions through RevenueCat and the app stores, analytics through PostHog, push tokens through Expo, Apple and Google. Their terms apply to their services. We are not responsible for third-party services, and their availability may affect Trope.

16. Availability and changes

We try to keep Trope available, but it may be interrupted for maintenance, updates, failures of our providers (AI models in particular are rate-limited and sometimes unavailable), or reasons outside our control. We may change, add or remove features, characters or limits, and may discontinue the Service. Where a change materially reduces what a paid subscription includes, we will tell you in the app and you may cancel.

17. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, that AI output will be accurate, appropriate or fit for any purpose, or that content will be preserved.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranties to be excluded, so some of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

18. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

These limits do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or, for consumers in the EEA and UK, liability under mandatory consumer law.

19. Indemnity

If you are not a consumer, or where the law allows, you agree to defend and indemnify us against claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your breach of these Terms, or your misuse of the Service.

20. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the law of [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: GOVERNING LAW], and disputes will be brought in the courts of [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: FORUM], without prejudice to mandatory consumer-protection rules in your country of residence that give you the right to bring proceedings, or be sued, in your own courts. Consumers in the EU may also use the European Commission's online dispute-resolution platform. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: decide whether to include arbitration / class-action waiver for US users; none is included here.]

Before starting a formal dispute, please contact support@trytrope.chat; most problems can be solved that way.

21. App store terms

If you downloaded Trope from the Apple App Store: these Terms are between you and us, not Apple; Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support; Apple is not responsible for any claim relating to the app, including product-liability, legal-compliance or intellectual-property claims; and Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce them. You confirm you are not in a country under a US government embargo and are not on a US restricted-party list.

If you downloaded Trope from Google Play, Google's terms of service also apply.

22. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. The date at the top shows the current version. For material changes we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use Trope after that means you accept the new Terms; if you do not, stop using the Service and delete your account.

23. General

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. If we do not enforce a provision, we are not waiving it. You may not transfer these Terms; we may transfer them to a successor. Nothing here creates a partnership, employment or agency relationship.
