Trope Privacy Policy
Draft under legal review. Items marked "legal review required" are not final.
Effective date: [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: EFFECTIVE DATE] Last updated: 2026-09-12
1. Introduction
Trope is a mobile app where you chat with fictional AI characters and take part in interactive stories. This policy explains what information Trope collects, why, who receives it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.
We have tried to write it so that a normal person can read it in one sitting. If something is unclear, write to us at support@trytrope.chat.
Short version:
- We collect what we need to run the app: an account, your age group (never your birthday), your preferences, your conversations and the characters you create.
- Your conversations are sent to an AI provider to generate each reply. That is how the app works. We do not use them to train our own AI models, for advertising, or for analytics.
- We do not sell your information and we do not show ads.
- Trope is not an adult-content app. Explicit content is not allowed for anyone.
- You can delete individual stories, memories and characters yourself at any time, and you can ask us to delete your whole account from Settings.
2. Who operates Trope
Trope is operated by [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: COMPANY LEGAL ENTITY], [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: COMPANY ADDRESS] ("Trope", "we", "us").
For the purposes of European data-protection law, that entity is the controller of the personal information described here. We have not appointed a data protection officer. Privacy questions go to support@trytrope.chat.
3. What this policy covers
This policy covers the Trope mobile app for iOS and Android and the website at trytrope.chat. It does not cover Apple, Google, or other companies' services that you use alongside Trope; their own policies apply to what they do with your information.
4. Information we collect: overview
| Where it comes from | What it is |
|---|---|
| You, when you create an account | Email address and password, or your Google account details |
| You, during onboarding | Your age group, who you want to meet in stories, the tropes you like, and the name characters should call you |
| You, while using the app | Your messages, the characters you create, your saved characters, memories you ask characters to keep, reports you submit, your display name |
| Your device, automatically | App version, operating system, device model, a random per-install identifier, a push-notification token if you allow notifications, and usage events (which screens you open and which features you use, but never what you write) |
| Our AI provider, on your behalf | The AI's replies, generated images and generated character profiles, which we store as part of your content |
| RevenueCat and the app stores | Whether you have an active Trope+ subscription and which plan |
We do not collect your date of birth (it stays on your device and only your age group is kept), your phone number, your location, your contacts, your photos, your microphone, an advertising identifier, or any payment-card details.
5. Information you provide
Account. An email address and a password, or, if you sign in with Google, the account identifier, name, email address and profile-picture link that Google provides. Passwords are stored only in hashed form. If you reset your password, we email you a one-time code.
Age group. At first launch we ask for your date of birth. Your device uses it to work out whether you meet the minimum age (see section 24) and whether you are under 18. Only the resulting age group ("13 to 17" or "18 or over") and the time it was set are stored. The date itself is discarded.
Onboarding preferences. Who you would like to meet in stories (women, men or everyone), the story tropes you pick, and an optional "story name" that characters use for you. All of these can be changed from Settings, and the story name can be skipped.
Profile. A display name.
Conversations. Everything you write to a character, and every reply the character gives, with timestamps.
Characters you create. Your answers in the character creator, including any free-text descriptions you type, together with the profile and portrait that are generated from them. Characters you create are visible only to you.
Memories. Facts a character has noted about you from your conversation so that later conversations feel continuous. You can see and delete every one of them.
Scene images. Images you ask the app to generate for a scene, and the captions that go with them.
Saved characters, reports and deletion requests. Which characters you bookmark; the reason you give when reporting a character or conversation (up to 500 characters); and the optional reason you give when requesting account deletion.
Support messages. Anything you send to support@trytrope.chat.
Please do not put sensitive information into a story. Characters are fiction, but what you write is processed by real systems (section 7). Do not share passwords, payment-card numbers, government identification numbers, one-time codes, health or financial details you want kept private, or other people's private information. If you do include such information, it will be handled like any other message.
6. Information collected automatically
- Device and app information: app version, operating system and version, device model, platform, language and screen size.
- A per-install identifier: a random value created on your device to recognise your device for notifications. It is not your push token and is not an advertising identifier.
- Push-notification token: only if you allow notifications (section 15).
- Usage events: which screens you open, which buttons you tap, whether a reply succeeded or failed, whether a purchase completed, and similar product events. These events never contain the text of your messages, your prompts, your email address or your date of birth.
- Network information: when your device talks to our servers or our analytics provider, they receive your IP address as part of normal internet traffic. We do not store IP addresses in your account. Our web server keeps standard request logs for the website.
7. Your conversations and the AI
When you chat with a character, what you write is processed to generate the character's reply and to provide the conversation features. Here is exactly what happens.
Where conversations are stored. On our own servers (section 20), in your account. Only you can read them; there is no public feed and no other user can see your conversations.
What is sent to the AI provider, and why. To write a reply, we send our AI provider, OpenRouter, the character's definition, your story name if you set one, a small number of the memories that character keeps about you, and the most recent part of your conversation (roughly the last 24 messages). OpenRouter forwards that to the AI model provider that runs the model. Separately, and only when relevant:
- to keep a character's memory current, recent turns of the conversation are sent so the model can extract short facts;
- to create a scene image, the last few messages and the character's description are sent so the model can write an image prompt, and that prompt is sent to an image model;
- to create a character, your creator answers are sent to a text model, and the resulting portrait description is sent to an image model.
We do not send your email address, your account identifier or your age group to AI providers.
Do AI providers keep it? OpenRouter and the model providers it routes to may retain what they receive for a period under their own policies, for example to operate their service, prevent abuse or comply with law. We are working to use only model endpoints whose terms do not permit training on customer content, but we cannot promise that no provider ever uses content to improve its models until that configuration is confirmed. We will update this section when it is. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: confirm the OpenRouter data policy and production model list, then tighten this paragraph.]
Does Trope train AI on your conversations? No. We do not train or fine-tune any AI model on your conversations, your characters or anything else you create.
Does Trope use conversations for product improvement? We do not read or analyse the content of conversations for analytics. We do look at aggregate, content-free signals (for example, how often replies fail, or how many messages a typical story has). Our staff may read a specific conversation only if you report it, if it is needed to answer your support request, or if we must investigate abuse or a legal matter.
Advertising. Never. There are no advertisers and no ad networks in Trope, and conversation content is never used for advertising.
Safety. Every character is instructed to keep stories non-explicit and to treat everyone in a story as an adult. These instructions are part of the prompt; they are not an automated filter, and AI models can still produce unexpected or inappropriate output. If a reply is inappropriate, report it from the message menu.
8. Characters and other content you create
Characters you create with Spark, the memories a character keeps, scene images and your conversations are your content. They are stored in your account and shown only to you. We process them to run the features you used to create them and for the safety purposes in section 9. Our Terms of Service explain the licence you give us to do that.
9. How we use information
| Purpose | Information used | Legal basis (EEA/UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Create and secure your account, sign you in, reset your password | Account information, device information | Performance of our contract with you |
| Provide conversations, memories, images and character creation | Conversations, characters, memories, story name, preferences | Performance of our contract |
| Recommend characters ("For you") | Onboarding preferences, which characters you chat with or save | Performance of our contract |
| Enforce the minimum age and keep the experience age-appropriate | Age group | Legal obligation; legitimate interest in protecting minors |
| Run Trope+ subscriptions and monthly usage limits | Subscription status, usage counters | Performance of our contract |
| Deliver notifications you have allowed (none are sent today) | Push token, device identifier | Consent (the operating-system permission) |
| Understand how the app is used and fix problems | Usage events, device information, error categories | Legitimate interest in improving and securing Trope [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: consent may be required for analytics on devices in the EEA/UK] |
| Review reports, investigate abuse, enforce our Terms | Reports, the reported content, account information | Legitimate interest in keeping Trope safe; legal obligation |
| Respond to you | Support messages, account information | Legitimate interest; performance of our contract |
| Comply with law and defend legal claims | Whatever is relevant | Legal obligation; legitimate interest |
We do not make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects using automated means alone. The age gate, the usage limits and recommendations are automated but are not decisions of that kind.
10. AI processing
Trope is built on third-party AI models. Everything a character says, every generated image and every generated character profile is produced by an AI model in response to what you and the character definition provide. Section 7 explains what leaves our systems for that purpose. AI output can be wrong, inconsistent or unexpected; our Terms of Service explain what that means for you.
11. Third-party AI providers
| Provider | Role | What it may receive |
|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter (OpenRouter, Inc.) | Routes our requests to AI text and image models | Character definitions, your story name, memories, recent conversation text, image prompts, character-creator answers, and two headers naming the app ("Trope", trytrope.chat) |
| The model providers behind OpenRouter | Run the models that write replies and generate images | The same content, forwarded by OpenRouter |
Which model providers are used can change. At the time of writing, the models in use are configured from the following families: Google (Gemma and Gemini), MiniMax, NVIDIA, Qwen (Alibaba) and Anthropic. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: replace with the production model list and keep it current.] We will keep this section up to date when we change providers in a way that affects your information.
12. Analytics and diagnostics
We use PostHog to understand how Trope is used. PostHog receives the usage events and device information described in section 6, plus a few account-level attributes: whether you are a Trope+ member, your age group, your companion preference and how many tropes you selected. Events are linked to your account identifier once you have an account; before that they are anonymous. PostHog also receives your IP address as part of the request and may derive an approximate location from it. PostHog's servers for our project are in the United States.
Analytics never includes the text of messages, prompts, emails or dates of birth.
We do not use a crash-reporting service, an advertising SDK or an attribution SDK. There is currently no in-app switch to turn analytics off; if you want your analytics data deleted or want to object to this processing, write to us (section 21).
13. Signing in
- Email and password. Handled by our own authentication system. Your password is hashed and cannot be read by us.
- Google. If you choose "Sign in with Google", Google tells us your account identifier, name, email address and profile picture. Google's privacy policy governs what Google does with your sign-in.
- Password reset. We send a one-time code to your email address through Resend, an email delivery service, which receives your address and the code.
- Sign in with Apple is not offered at this time.
We do not offer guest or anonymous accounts. You can browse characters without an account; an account is needed to chat.
14. Payments and subscriptions
Trope+ is sold as an in-app subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The store handles payment; we never receive or store your payment-card or bank details.
We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat receives the store's purchase receipt or transaction, the product you bought, the price and currency, the store it came from, and information the RevenueCat software collects about your device and app version. Your RevenueCat customer identifier is your Trope account identifier; we do not give RevenueCat your email address or name. RevenueCat tells our servers whether your subscription is active, which product it is, the store, and when it expires, and that is what we store.
To change or cancel a subscription, use the store's subscription settings (Settings → Manage subscription opens them for you). Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their rules.
15. Push notifications
If you allow notifications, your device gets a push token from Expo's push service, Apple or Google, and the app registers that token with our servers alongside your per-install identifier, platform, app version and OS version. Trope does not send any notifications yet; the registration only makes it possible in future. When we start sending them, we will describe what they contain here first. The token is never shown to the app after registration, and it is deactivated when you sign out or when the same device signs into a different account. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
16. How we share information
We share personal information only:
- With the service providers listed in this policy (OpenRouter and its model providers, PostHog, RevenueCat, Google for sign-in, Resend, Expo/Apple/Google push services), each for the purpose described, and with the company that hosts our servers.
- With Apple and Google as needed to process purchases and operate the app stores.
- When required by law, such as to respond to a valid legal request, or to protect the safety of a person, prevent fraud or abuse, or enforce our Terms.
- With a successor if Trope is acquired or merges with another company, in which case this policy continues to apply to your information until you are told otherwise.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not share your conversations with other users.
17. Advertising and tracking
Trope has no advertising. We do not use advertising identifiers, ad networks, tracking pixels or attribution SDKs. Our website uses no cookies and no analytics.
18. How long we keep information
We keep information for as long as it is needed to provide Trope, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce our agreements. More specifically:
- Your account, preferences, conversations, memories, images and characters: until you delete them or your account is deleted. Deleting a story deletes its messages and images; deleting a character you created deletes it with its conversations, memories and portrait; deleting a memory removes it immediately.
- Memories are also capped: each character keeps at most 80, and the least important are dropped when new ones arrive.
- Usage counters (how many messages and images you used in a month) are kept per month for the life of the account.
- Reports are kept so that we can act on them and show that we did.
- Push-device registrations are marked inactive when you sign out; inactive rows are kept until account deletion.
- Backups. Our database is backed up in full every night. Deleted data may remain in a backup until that backup is rotated. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: state the backup retention period once it is defined.]
- Analytics, subscription and AI-provider records are held by those providers under their own retention rules.
19. Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS between the app, our servers, and every provider), access controls on our servers, hashed passwords, and server-side checks that only let you read and change your own data. AI-provider keys and other secrets are held on the server and never in the app.
No internet service can guarantee absolute security. Conversations are not end-to-end encrypted: our systems and our AI provider must be able to read them to generate replies. If you believe your account has been compromised, change your password and contact us.
20. International transfers
Our servers are located in [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: SERVER COUNTRY/HOSTING PROVIDER]. Our providers operate in other countries: PostHog stores our analytics in the United States, and OpenRouter and the model providers it routes to operate in the United States and elsewhere.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, this means your information is transferred outside your region. Where a provider is not covered by an adequacy decision, we rely on the provider's standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: confirm the transfer mechanism for each provider.] You can ask us for more information about these safeguards.
21. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you and receive a copy;
- correct information that is inaccurate;
- delete your information;
- receive the information you provided in a portable format;
- restrict or object to certain processing, including processing based on legitimate interests such as analytics;
- withdraw consent where processing is based on consent (for example, notification permission), without affecting what was done before;
- not be discriminated against for exercising these rights;
- complain to a supervisory authority. In the EEA that is your national data-protection authority; in the UK it is the Information Commissioner's Office.
Residents of California and other US states with privacy laws have rights to know, delete and correct, and to opt out of "sales" and "sharing" of personal information and of targeted advertising. Trope does not sell or share personal information for those purposes and does not use sensitive personal information for anything other than providing the service, so there is nothing to opt out of; the other rights are honoured as described here.
How to exercise a right. Many things you can do yourself in the app: edit your display name and preferences in Settings, delete stories from the chat menu, delete memories from a character's memory page, delete characters you created from the character screen, and request account deletion in Settings. For anything else, email support@trytrope.chat from the address on your account. We will verify that the request comes from the account holder (normally by replying to that email) and respond within the time the applicable law requires. Requests for exports are currently handled manually.
22. Deleting your account
Go to Settings → Delete account. This marks your account for deletion. Until we process it, you can cancel from the same place.
When we process the request we delete your account, your sign-in details, your preferences, your conversations and their images, your memories, the characters you created and their portraits, your saved list, your subscription record and your device registrations. We process requests manually and aim to do so within a reasonable time. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED: commit to a timeline once the deletion job exists.]
Some information may remain after deletion:
- copies in backups until they are rotated (section 18);
- reports you submitted or that concern your content, where we need them to keep Trope safe or show what action we took;
- records we must keep to comply with law, resolve disputes or enforce our agreements;
- information already held by providers under their own policies: RevenueCat and the app stores keep purchase records; PostHog keeps analytics records until deleted under its rules; AI providers keep whatever their retention policy allows. On request we will ask these providers to delete what they can.
Deleting the app from your device does not delete your account.
23. Children
Trope is not directed to children under 13, or under the higher minimum age that applies where you live (section 24). We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone below that age. The age gate blocks anyone whose date of birth puts them below the minimum, and locks the app on that device for 24 hours.
If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child below the minimum age, we will delete the account and its data. If you believe a child has an account, email support@trytrope.chat.
24. Age requirements and users under 18
You must be at least 13 years old to use Trope. In some countries the minimum is higher because of local law on children's consent: 14 in Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Italy, Lithuania and Spain; 15 in the Czech Republic, France, Greece and Slovenia; 16 in Germany, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. The app applies the minimum for the region set on your device.
Age is self-declared. We ask for your date of birth and keep only your age group; we do not verify identity, ask for identification documents or use a third-party age-verification service. Giving a false date of birth is a breach of our Terms.
Users between the minimum age and 18 can use Trope. Their age group is recorded as "13 to 17" and is used to keep the experience appropriate. All content in Trope is non-explicit for everyone, whatever their age. We do not offer a separate mature mode. Users under 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to use Trope and to make any in-app purchase.
Trope is not an adult-content or sexual-companion app and is not intended for sexual or explicit role-play.
25. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when our practices change. The "last updated" date at the top shows the current version. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
